Two teams, two different messes
Commerce app, Bangkok — unnamed checkout family
A nine-person analytics group had seventeen variants of checkout events. Three contained email or phone fragments in the event title. Downstream, a marketing extract refreshed nightly with no retention clock.
During the Rayong Cohort they built an owner map with two stewards (analytics + warehouse) and retired eleven names. The remaining six carry a consent flag that survives the first dbt model. They did not finish masking in Looker during the seven weeks; that work moved to a later Resident Desk day. Tuition was informational cohort pricing; no payment ran through this site.
Health-adjacent consumer app — retention theatre
The privacy page promised 90-day deletion. The product analytics warehouse held 14 months of symptom_search events, plus a laptop CSV from an intern. Counsel in Thailand had already asked for evidence.
Governance Desk work focused on clocks, not taxonomy. We listed every copy the team would admit to, assigned deletion owners, and wrote a one-page note counsel could attach. Search events were renamed so the string no longer implied a clinical category. Limitation: we are teachers, not their Data Protection Officer; they still needed their own counsel to sign the final notice.
